Alan Shearer raves about Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz during Arsenal win

Alan Shearer has lavished praise on Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz for his performance in Sunday’s 3-0 win over Arsenal – naming the Brazilian in his Premier League Team of the Week.

The 22-year-old has been in fine form once again for Villa this season after starring during his maiden Villa Park campaign during 2019/20.

Luiz has started all seven league games in Dean Smith’s engine room this season, with the Villans claiming five wins and two defeats.

Their start to the campaign has been considerably better than last season and the Brazilian performer has once again been at the forefront of everything good.

Shearer was impressed with the former Manchester City player at the weekend and placed him in the Team of the Week.

He told the Premier League’s official website: “He ran the midfield with a passing masterclass.”

TBR View – Luiz proving unsung hero of Aston Villa’s season

The young midfielder was one of Villa’s better players during the last campaign and he’s picked up where he left off during 2020/21.

Luiz earns £32,000-a-week at Villa Park and has been trusted as the holding midfielder in Smith’s team.

Villa’s attacking outlets have earned rave reviews for their performances this season but Luiz’s presence has been just as important.

At present, the team are defying the odds and some pundits have already started mentioning European qualification.

That is perhaps somewhat premature though.

Villa’s squad isn’t exactly big and a few injuries to key players could see their form drop off.

For now, though, supporters will enjoy the ride.
