Alan Shearer picks out Conte tactical tweak that won Tottenham the game against Leeds

Tottenham came from behind to see off Leeds United this weekend and Alan Shearer believes it was all down to tactical changes from Antonio Conte.

Spurs were heading for defeat after a wretched first half saw them 1-0 down thanks to a Daniel James goal. In that opening 45, Leeds pressed and harried Spurs into mistakes and it looked like being another frustrating day.

However, Tottenham were a new side after the half-time break. Conte had clearly had words with the players and goals from Hojbjerg and Reguilon ensured a fine comeback was completed.

And according to Alan Shearer, all the credit needs to go to Antonio Conte for the slight changes he made to the system.

All of the Tottenham team, particularly the wing backs, what they did in the second half was that the front three played as a front three but they also had the wing-backs, Emerson and Reguilon, right up the pitch”, Shearer told PremierLeague.com

“What they were saying to Leeds is if you want to be brave you’re going to have go man to man with us. All of a sudden Leeds had six men back. Everyone got at least 10-15 yards further up the pitch and Leeds couldn’t handle it. And that’s what Conte demanded at half-time, and they did it really well.”

Conte, of course, will be hoping for more of the same in the next few games as he gets to grips with his players and the way they work.

TBR’s View: Conte deserves credit for Tottenham turnaround

The best coaches make small tweaks that have big impacts and that’s exactly what happened with Conte and Tottenham here.

As Shearer says, Spurs simply played higher up the pitch and Leeds did not like it at all. They struggled to contain and in the end, Tottenham might have scored even more goals.

For Tottenham fans, it was great to see. Their team had fight but along with that fight, it’s clear the players are listening to Conte.
