Alan Shearer pinpoints reason behind minor Tottenham dip with two defeats

Alan Shearer has singled out Tottenham centre-forward Harry Kane after his side suffered back-to-back defeats in the Premier League.

Spurs have slipped down the league table from top to sixth in the past week after losing against both Liverpool and Leicester City, making a small dent in any possible title aspirations.

Shearer isn’t trying to rip into Kane after a stunning individual campaign so far, rather highlight just how important he is to the Spurs team in every game.

The England captain missed a great headed opportunity in the 2-1 defeat at Anfield against Liverpool, while on Sunday he was fairly ineffective in the 2-0 home loss against Leicester.

He’s been in stunning form so far this campaign, but has had a minor dip in the past week.

“Tottenham have lost twice in the past seven days, and it’s no coincidence that Harry Kane had a quiet game on both occasions,” Shearer told BBC Sport.

“I still think Spurs are serious title contenders despite those defeats by Liverpool and Leicester, but for them to start firing again after Christmas, they will need Kane back on top form.”

If the player of the year was to be announced tomorrow, there would be an enormous case to say Spurs frontman Kane would be a worthy winner of that award given his form so far this season.

The striker has scored 15 goals in 21 games across all competitions so far this campaign, plus contributed with 13 assists.

His all-round game has been heavily discussed now he’s adding more creativity to his game and being found in deeper positions, which is why Spurs become a much less effective side when he’s kept quiet.
