Alan Shearer has now been sharing his view on Ollie Watkins’ antics when facing his old club Brentford for Aston Villa this weekend.

It’s never easy returning to your former club and Watkins was clearly getting caught up in the emotion of the occasion.

And following the scenes that were sparked by his goal celebration for Villa, Shearer was actually quite sympathetic towards Watkins.

Shearer admitted that he often did the same in his playing career and he thought Watkins was right to celebrate as he did.

Speaking on ‘The Rest is Football’ podcast, Shearer thought the England striker was making a real statement.

He said: “Ollie Watkins having a row with a fan behind the goal! He pointed his finger through the net.

“I have been there myself, it doesn’t half spur you on. It’s just the incentive when you are getting hammered by fans.

“You just think I am going to have the last laugh here and he’s entitled to do exactly what he did, Ollie Watkins.

“Just pointed at the supporter, probably thinking that’s for you mate. Don’t ever do that again.”

Although a lot of the focus remained on the unsavoury scenes at the end of the game, it shouldn’t be forgotten what a vital three points Villa achieved.

Unai Emery’s side are doing unbelievably well, now sat one point behind the league leaders heading towards Christmas Day.

And should Arsenal draw when they travel to Anfield this weekend, which wouldn’t be a huge surprise, Villa would be top at Christmas if they overcame Sheffield United at home.

It’s a remarkable thought.

And just like many have of late, Alan Shearer would probably point to how vital it is for Aston Villa that Ollie Watkins remains fit.

Whether fans and pundits believe in a title-challenge or not, every bit of success hinges on Watkins being available.

Jhon Duran looks to be a very exciting young player, but is unlikely to be ready to shoulder such a burden at this stage of his career.

That being said, one former England international does believe that Villa can achieve something extraordinary this season.
