West Ham United loanee Craig Dawson has been praised by Alan Shearer, who named the Hammers “unsung hero” in his Premier League Team of the Week.

The 30-year-old joined West Ham on a season-long loan from Watford in October, with an option to buy.

Although Dawson didn’t feature in a senior Hammers game until their last Premier League fixture of 2020, he’s been one of the first names on David Moyes’ team sheet ever since.

To date, the former England Under-21 defender has made 11 competitive appearances for the East Londoners, scoring three goals.

Dawson has been key in the Hammers’ superb run of form in recent weeks, helping them to six wins and two draws from their last nine league games.

He was once again superb for West Ham in Monday night’s 3-0 win over Sheffield United, a threat going forward and a rock at the back.

Dawson’s efforts saw him named in Shearer’s latest XI, the only Hammers players to make the cut.

“An unsung hero of this West Ham United team who are fighting for a top-four spot,” the England legend wrote on the Premier League website.

Dawson has proved a very shrewd acquisition for West Ham, a tall, imposing, vocal and no-nonsense defender who’s not afraid to put his body on the line in every game.

Watford reportedly offered the Hammers the chance sign him permanently for just £3million in January, and given how well he’s been doing, surely it’ll be a no-brainer come the summer.
