Alan Shearer names two Arsenal players in his Premier League Team of the Season so far

Alan Shearer has named his Premier League team of the season so far as we head into the unprecedented mid-season World Cup break.

Arsenal have raced to the top of the Premier League and that is reflected in the fact that Mikel Arteta is the manager of this hypothetical side.

William Saliba and Granit Xhaka, who is playing further forward this season, have also been named in the XI, and deservedly so.

Shearer is a Newcastle legend and has named no fewer than five Magpies players in his team here, as they sit in the Champions League spots.

Three players signed by Eddie Howe make the cut; summer signing Nick Pope as well as major January additions Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes.

But it is also testament to Howe’s coaching that two players he inherited from Steve Bruce are in this team – Fabian Schar and Miguel Almiron.

Almiron has been transformed this season, going from a workmanlike wideman to dangerous threat cutting in from that right hand side.

Manchester City are also represented by Joao Cancelo, Kevin de Bruyne and Erling Haaland, who has made a mockery of early fears he would take time to settle in the Premier League.

James Maddison plays on the right of midfield for Leicester but has been shoehorned into this team on the left, and he is of course at the World Cup with England right now, alongside Pope and Trippier.

The Premier League will go onto the back burner now, with the World Cup taking centre stage, although Almiron and Haaland will not be there.
