Newcastle United finished their season in impressive style by claiming a comfortable 4-0 win over already-relegated Fulham at Craven Cottage. Goals from Jonjo Shelvey, Ayoze Perez and Fabian Schar got the ball rolling before Salomon Rondon put the icing on the cake.

It was a game and performance thoroughly enjoyed by Newcastle legend Alan Shearer.

However, speaking on Match of the Day (12/05/2019), he made it clear that Newcastle must keep both Rondon, and their manager Rafa Benitez.

“They need to sort his (Benitez’s) future out. They need to keep him at all costs.

“Whether they want to pay that money (for Rondon) is a different matter. If it was me, I would do that. He’s been excellent.

“First and foremost, they need to sort his Rafa’s future out. They need to keep him.”

There is plenty of discussion going on regarding the future of Benitez. His current contract at St James’ Park ends at the end of June and fans at the club desperately want him to stay.

Why wouldn’t they?

The Spaniard has been fantastic for the club and has built a massive rapport with the fanbase on Tyneside.

As reported by The Chronicle, he wants more control on transfers, specifically regarding those over the age of 24. Which brings us to Rondon. He remains on loan from West Brom. Again, he is keen to stay and Benitez wants him. However, he falls foul of the age restriction. A fee reported by The Chronicle of £16.5 million could secure the Venezuelan permanently. Ashley clearly has fears over his and players of a similar vintage’s resale value.

Shearer is clear in his belief that a compromise must be found in order to keep both men at Newcastle this summer. Time will tell if such common ground can be found. Newcastle fans will certainly hope so.
