Alan Shearer has told the Premier League’s official website that Illan Meslier was outstanding during Leeds United’s win over Fulham on Friday, before lauding teammate Patrick Bamford for his own display.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side got back to winning ways after a disappointing run. They beat Scott Parker’s men 2-1 at Craven Cottage, with Raphinha getting the winner during the second-half.

It was Bamford who opened the scoring for the visitors. The 27-year-old bagged his 14th goal of the campaign with a great piece of movement.

Bamford went into the game with a point to prove after being left out of Gareth Southgate’s latest England squad. And unfortunately, the evening ended early for the striker as he came off due to injury.

He went into the game after picking up a knock against Chelsea in the previous fixture. But Shearer suggested that he was hugely impressed with what he saw from the striker as he named him in his team of the week.

“You wouldn’t have guessed he was carrying an injury. A superbly taken goal and a great assist as he led the line brilliantly,” he told the Premier League’s official website.

Leeds trio included

Bamford was not the only Leeds player to make the squad. Along with Raphinha, Meslier was also included.

The Frenchman made a couple of remarkable stops during the first-half from Josh Maja and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa. And Shearer suggested that his performance was pivotal in helping Leeds to victory.

“Produced two outstanding saves to keep Fulham at bay and lay the foundations for an impressive Leeds victory,” he added.

It could be an extremely important result for Leeds. They are, obviously, not yet mathematically safe. But it does appear that they are almost there.

They have gone into the international break with a win under their belt. And that will leave them with a lot of confidence for when the domestic season resumes.
