Alan Shearer has told the Premier League’s official website that Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg was outstanding in Tottenham Hotspur’s weekend win, while he also lauded Jose Mourinho for a tactical masterclass.
Spurs now sit top of the Premier League table after beating Manchester City 2-0 on Saturday. It was a real statement of intent from Mourinho’s men.
Tottenham seemed to follow Mourinho’s plan to the letter. And it paid off in some style as Son Heung-min and Giovani Lo Celso secured the three points.
One of the most impressive performances came in midfield however, with Hojbjerg producing another stunning display to help frustrate Pep Guardiola’s side.
Shearer included the Dane in his Team of the Weekend, with Mourinho named as the side’s manager.
“He was outstanding once more and bossed the midfield against Manchester City,” he told the Premier League website when commenting on Hojbjerg.
“Outsmarted his old rival Pep Guardiola with a tactical masterclass,” he added, on Mourinho.
Both Mourinho and Hojbjerg have managed to silence their doubters in recent times. Some had concerns about whether the Portuguese was still capable of building a side that could fight for the title.
There is a long way to go this season. But the early signs certainly hint they will be in the mix.
Meanwhile, it is already easy to forgot how poorly Hojbjerg’s Tottenham spell started. The midfielder endured an incredibly tough debut on the opening day of the campaign.
But just a few months on, it already appears that paying £15 million for him in the summer (fee reported by Sky Sports) was simply a masterstroke.
