Alan Shearer lauds Declan Rice after West Ham win
Alan Shearer has told Match of the Day that Declan Rice is an excellent player and insisted that the West Ham star is going to be vital for England this summer.
David Moyes’s men have enjoyed an incredible season which culminated in the Hammers booking their spot in next year’s Europa League.
They ensured that they would make a return to continental competition on the final day as they thrashed Southampton at the London Stadium.
And Rice was, unsurprisingly, was one of the stars of the show. It was certainly fitting that it was the Englishman who rounded off the scoring with a smart finish during the second-half.
And following the game, Shearer insisted that he is going to have a huge role for Gareth Southgate’s side in the coming weeks.
“I think he will be vital for England in the summer,” he told Match of the Day. “The way he plays, still only 22. I think he reads the game, he’s obviously got an excellent partnership with [Tomas] Soucek in the midfield.
“He keeps it simple, he stops teams attacking. Can play, can pass. I think he’s an excellent player.”
It is frightening to see how good Rice is. As Shearer notes, he only turned 22 at the start of the year. So potentially, there is an opportunity for the youngster to get considerably better.
And West Ham are doing their bit in ensuring that they can match his ambitions. It is an amazing achievement to have booked a spot in Europe next year.
It is now imperative that the club look to build on their success. With players such as Rice and Soucek in the ranks, they have the potential to achieve something extremely special from here.
