Alan Shearer has taken to Twitter to suggest that Andy Robertson has to be a contender for player of the season after Liverpool beat Everton in the Merseyside derby on Sunday.

The Reds have kept the pressure on Manchester City after a hard-fought victory at Anfield. Everton kept them out for the first hour. And they caused problems of their own with Anthony Gordon impressing for the Toffees.

But Liverpool ultimately got the win with a 2-0 victory. Divock Origi scored yet another important goal for Jurgen Klopp’s side to seal the three points.

But it was Robertson who broke the deadlock with a smart finish at the back post. The Scotland international was there to convert Mohamed Salah’s cross just after the hour-mark.

Robertson was also there to bail the home side out while the game was in the balance. He produced a massive clearance off the line with Alex Iwobi poised to tap the ball home.

Should Liverpool go on and win the title, many may look back at Robertson’s display on Sunday as a huge moment in the race.

And Shearer was clearly hugely impressed by what he saw from the left-back. He took to Twitter to suggest that few have had a better season…

Liverpool depth at left-back goes under radar as Robertson shines

Obviously, the quality Liverpool possess up front takes many of the headlines. But they have so much depth all over the pitch, with left-back an area of real strength.

Robertson is undoubtedly one of the best full-backs in the world right now. And in most other teams, Kostas Tsimikas would be a regular starter. He has been superb whenever called upon.

Tsimikas deserves a lot of credit for pushing Robertson. Having those two players in the ranks is clearly making a real difference.
