Alan Shearer lauds Allan Saint-Maximin after Newcastle draw at Liverpool

Alan Shearer has told the Premier League’s official website that Liverpool could not handle Allan Saint-Maximin as he named the Newcastle United star in his Team of the Week.

Liverpool had taken an early lead, and went on to produce a number of brilliant chances. However, they were unable to put the game to bed.

And they were punished late on. Callum Wilson had his goal disallowed for handball. But Joe Willock did score an equaliser moments later in stoppage-time.

Newcastle had grown into the game in the second-half. And Saint-Maximin was pivotal to their fightback.

The Frenchman completed eight dribbles during the game. Remarkably, that was five more than any other player on the pitch (via Whoscored).

And Shearer suggested that he was the standout performer as he named the 24-year-old in his Team of the Week.

“Liverpool couldn’t handle him,” he told the Premier League’s official website. “Every time Newcastle got the ball, it looked like he could hurt them.”

It was a performance that attracted a lot of praise from Liverpool fans. Saint-Maximin responded to a supporter’s tweet urging the Reds to swap Sadio Mane for the Magpies winger.

And while many lauded his class for defending Mane, several fans still insisted that they would love to see him signed.

Newcastle are unbeaten in the four games since Saint-Maximin’s return from injury. And the eight points they have taken from those fixtures have put them on the brink of safety.
