BBC pundit Alan Shearer has showered praise on Liverpool midfielders Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Gini Wijnaldum after their 3-1 victory over Manchester City.
In the Sun, he praised the trio, who he said often play second fiddle to the frontline but were key to dominating the match against Pep Guardiola’s side.
He said: “This dynamic trio tend to play second fiddle to the Reds’ front line of when it comes to dishing out the plaudits. But it was the home side’s engine room which made the real difference. Fabinho, Gini Wijnaldum and Jordan Henderson made sure that Liverpool controlled the game.
TBR’s View – Trio epitomised what Klopp wants from his midfield
The conversation about Liverpool not having a central playmaker since Philippe Coutinho’s departure is tiresome now.
A player like that might help the Reds in games against deep defences but Jurgen Klopp has assembled a hard-working, disciplined midfield which allows the full backs and forwards such immense creative freedom.
The three who shut down City showed exactly that at Anfield on Sunday and the demands for a creative fulcrum completely miss that point.
