Alan Shearer has just made an interesting claim about Tottenham’s James Maddison

Alan Shearer has now made a surprising claim about Tottenham Hotspur’s James Maddison on the back of this weekend’s games.

Ange Postecoglou’s side could only watch on as Aston Villa gained ground in the race for fourth-place this weekend.

And if there wasn’t already enough incentive for this Sunday’s North London Derby, then Spurs have just been handed some more.

Not only can Postecoglou’s team stifle Arsenal’s chances of lifting the Premier League title, but they also simply can’t afford to slip up in their own pursuit.

Tottenham’s six remaining games are incredibly tough, but there’s no reason to think they can’t be fruitful if Spurs recapture their early season form.

In 2024 Ange Postecoglou’s team have been largely indifferent, slightly unrecognisable in aspects from the team that had their own title-aspirations last year.

And perhaps that is no better represented than with the form of James Maddison.

The England midfielder hasn’t been poor by any means of late, but he simply hasn’t been able to replicate his early season form since returning from his injury.

Alan Shearer thinks James Maddison may struggle to get into England’s Euros squad

James Maddison has still demonstrated his delightful skill and passing range in games, but doesn’t quite have the same authority right now.

And when discussing Trent Alexander-Arnold’s chances of being in the England squad on ‘The Rest Is Football’ podcast, Alan Shearer discussed the Tottenham man’s chances too.

The pundit thought both might struggle to get into Gareth Southgate’s squad if it is only 23 names.

Shearer explained: “I don’t see it as that straight forward. If it’s a squad of 26 he has a much better chance.

“If it’s a squad of 23 then I think he may struggle to get in. Maybe not Madders, either.”

Of course, it would be an outrageous decision to leave players as good as Trent and Maddison at home, but at the same time it doesn’t seem unthinkable.

Both have been on the periphery of things under Southgate despite the starring roles they’ve played in the Premier League.

And as unfair as some may think it is, Maddison’s Tottenham form isn’t doing too much to change Southgate’s thinking right now.

Maddison should be a shoe-in for the England squad, but perhaps Shearer’s words should be a warning for the midfielder, who will still hope to prove his starting credentials in these final six games, let alone his place in the squad altogether.

All that being said, some comments that Mido made about Tottenham back in 2013 are now coming back to light.
