Premier League legend Alan Shearer has given his verdict on Leeds United’s Elland Road stadium, sharing how he felt playing in front of the Whites fans.

Elland Road is famous for being a fairly intimidating environment for opposition teams, who have to play in front of incredibly passionate fans.

Shearer was discussing some of the toughest places to play in English football in the latest Match of The Day: Top 10 podcast, along with Micah Richards and Gary Lineker.

Elland Road was one of the 10 that made the cut, with Shearer speaking about his experiences playing at the ground.

“I loved Elland Road,” said the former Newcastle and Blackburn star. “It was one of those grounds I just knew I would score goals. It is a great atmosphere.

“I loved going there; it was always a happy hunting ground. [The fans] were boisterous.”

A bit of a cheeky compliment from Shearer – he praises Elland Road’s atmosphere and the Leeds fans but also says he loved playing there as he’d score plenty of goals.

It’s been a bittersweet season for Leeds, who have had to make do without fans in their first season back in the Premier League since the mid-2000s.

However, they’ve been great and look set for a mid-table finish, the only promoted team this term not to be battling relegation.

So next season – fingers crossed – fans will be back and Elland Road will have that great atmosphere once again with top-flight football taking place.
