Newcastle United midfielder Lewis Miley made Magpies history on Saturday, to the delight of everyone connected with the club.

The 17-year-old has become the youngest player to score for Newcastle in the Premier League with the opener against Fulham at St James’ Park.

Miley came off the bench and, in the 57th minute, fired across Cottagers keeper Bernd Leno to find the bottom left corner of the net.

Aged 17 years and 229 days, he’s also the youngest scorer in the competition since Federico Macheda for Manchester United in April 2009.

Newcastle legend Alan Shearer took to X to praise Miley for the historic milestone.

“Ah man what a feeling for Lewis Miley,” he wrote, adding applause emojis and black and white hearts.

Newcastle went on to put Fulham to the sword, scoring twice more before full time.

In the 64th minute, Anthony Gordon slipped a pass through Callum Wilson, who was brought down by Antonee Robinson before the ball ran kindly for Miguel Almiron to slot in.

Then, eight minutes from time, Dan Burn bundled home after his initial header from Bruno Guimaraes’ cross had been saved by Leno.

The Magpies have struck gold with Miley. He is a once-in-a-generation talent who looks set to have an incredibly bright future in the game.

Normally, if a 17-year-old is playing in the Under-21s – as opposed to the Under-18s – that means he’s already an outstanding prospect.

It’s incredibly rare to see a 17-year-old getting regular minutes in the Premier League and Champions League, never mind scoring. But that’s what Miley is doing.

It’ll be exciting to see how Miley continues to develop. And he’s certainly at the ideal club for it, one that also looks set for an exciting future.
