Arsenal and Manchester City are once again expected to go head-to-head in the race to win the Premier League title this season.
The two clubs have battled extremely hard since the 2022/23 season, and Mikel Arteta’s men have come close on both occasions.
However, Manchester City proved to be too good for Arsenal in the end.
A new season has begun now, and Arsenal would love nothing more than to go all the away. Shearer appears to have changed his mind about Arteta’s side.
Alan Shearer makes Arsenal title claim after watching them vs Wolves
Arsenal kicked off their 2024/25 Premier League campaign with an impressive win over Wolves.
The Gunners were the favourites to beat Gary O’Neil’s side and they started the game in brilliant fashion. They were all over Wolves, especially in the first half.
Goals from Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka sealed the win for the North Londoners, and everyone who watched them on Saturday afternoon was impressed with how they played.
Shearer too was blown away, and the Newcastle United legend may have just changed his mind about Arsenal now.
In a recent episode of the Rest is Football podcast, Shearer claimed that the only way Arsenal will win the Premier League is if they sign a prolific striker.
Then, in the same episode, while revealing his predictions, he backed Manchester City to go all the way for the fifth season in a row.
However, after Arsenal’s win over Wolves on Saturday, Shearer has claimed that the Gunners could do it this season.
When Gary Lineker asked him about Arsenal’s title chances, Shearer said on BBC’s Match of the Day: “Yeah, best defence in the league last season, they have gone out and signed a defender. We expect Merino to come in next week.
“89 points last season, took it all the way to the final day. I think they can do it, yeah, absolutely. I think they can do it, yes, definitely!”
Arsenal’s next four games could decide their title hopes
Arsenal have been handed a tough start to the season.
Arteta’s men had to face Wolves at home on the opening day, which was not bad, but their next four games are extremely tricky.
The Gunners take on Unai Emery’s Aston Villa away from home next, and that will not be an easy fixture. Then, they face Brighton and Hove Albion, who looked very good on the opening day.
After that, Arsenal have back-to-back away games against Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City.
If the Premier League runners-up come out of these four games unscathed, they will likely become many people’s favourites to win the title this season.
