Alan Shearer brands £40k-a-week Newcastle man as 'terrible', as Toon suffer 2-0 defeat to Arsenal

Alan Shearer has told Premier League Productions that Jamaal Lascelles’ defending was “terrible”, as Arsenal beat Newcastle 2-0 on Saturday.

Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Martinelli got the goals, succumbing Eddie Howe to defeat in his first match in the dugout as Newcastle’s new manager.

Saka opened the scoring just before the hour mark, scoring superbly from the left flank. It came after a 16-pass move, in which Saka drifted in.

The England international picked the ball up after being involved in earlier passes, being afforded the space between the lines to pick Newcastle off.

Toon legend Shearer responded on PLP after the match, criticising captain Lascelles for not closing Saka down. He branded the defending as “terrible”.

“Look at Lascelles in the middle, he has got to smell the danger,” Shearer said in his analysis. “He was just standing there with his arms in the air.

“He has to engage a second earlier. Terrible defending, it is why Newcastle are down there they area,” Shearer added on the £40k-a-week (Spotrac) ace.

Shearer on Lascelles: Newcastle need more quality at centre-back

That is, even with playing a back three. The fact Newcastle are playing with three in defence is because they lack the quality required at centre-back.

Lascelles is arguably the club’s best central defender. Fabian Schar is inconsistent, Fede Fernandez is getting on and Ciaran Clark is poor.

Newcastle need better quality at centre-back if they are to have any chance of avoiding the drop. James Tarkowski would be a great start for them.

January is pivotal for Newcastle. Can they convince players to join? Can they secure some signings? A few wins is needed between then, and now.
