Alan Shearer asked if Newcastle have a chance of signing Bellingham

Alan Shearer has joked with BBC Sport that he would love to say that Newcastle United could sign Jude Bellingham, but admitted that he expects the midfielder to join a club closer to challenging for a Premier League title.

Bellingham’s stock has risen sharply during the course of the World Cup. Of course, he was already considered one of the most exciting talents in world football with his performances for Borussia Dortmund.

But he has been outstanding for England. And he was the star of the show as the Three Lions beat Senegal in the last 16 in Qatar.

Certainly, the race for his signature has only ramped up in recent weeks. But it is fair to say that only a handful of clubs will be able to afford the 19-year-old.

Sport recently claimed that his asking price could be as high as £130 million.

One club who may perhaps have the funds to make such a bid is Newcastle. However, Shearer is not expecting Bellingham to end up on Tyneside.

Shearer was asked which of the current England squad is his favourite. And after lauding Bellingham, he responded to whether there is a chance that he could end up at Newcastle.

“You have to look at the midfield and Bellingham and what he’s doing and done. Everything about him, his aura, his personality, the way he talks to the media, the way he handles himself on the football pitch. Bellingham’s been outrageously good for someone who’s so young,” he told BBC Sport.

“I would love to think so. But I suspect he might have a few more offers from clubs that are already going to challenge for the Premier League, rather than a team that will be in years to come.”

Few Newcastle fans will be holding out any hope of actually signing Bellingham. The Magpies have been unbelievable in the Premier League this season. And it seems that their progress has come a lot sooner than many expected.

Nevertheless, Bellingham is looking like a world-class player already. And that next step for him would surely be challenging for titles and major trophies.

As Shearer suggests, Newcastle look destined for that level. But the race for Bellingham’s signature may come too soon for Howe’s side.
