Ajax have described Tottenham Hotspur star Jan Vertonghen as “world class” on Twitter after Spurs came from behind to beat Vertonghen’s former side on away goals.
Spurs faced 3-0 deficit against Ajax with only 45 minutes of the two-legged tie to play, but Lucas Moura scored a sensational hat-trick to send the north Londoners through on away goals.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side boast plenty of connections with Ajax, as Vertonghen, Christian Eriksen, Davinson Sanchez and Toby Alderweireld all used to play for the Dutch club.
Vertonghen posted a heartfelt Tweet to Ajax, stating it was “great” to return to the Johan Cruyff Stadium, before Ajax replied to their academy product – describing him as “world class”.
TBR’s view
Such a comeback against Ajax will only boost Spurs in their remaining two fixtures this season. They take on Everton at the new ground on Sunday, before the Champions League final on June 1.
Liverpool have proven in Europe time and time again that they can beat anyone, and convincingly. But taking Anfield out of the equation, Spurs may have a better chance in the final than they would over two legs.
Harry Kane looks likely to be fit in time for the match, and that will be an enormous boost for Pochettino’s side in pursuit of the Champions League trophy.
