Ajax boss Schreuder responds when asked if he has spoken to Erik ten Hag about how to beat Liverpool

Ajax manager Alfred Schreuder brings his side to Anfield tonight looking to engineer a victory over Liverpool.

It was an awful start to this season’s European campaign for last term’s beaten finalists as they lost 4-1 to Napoli.

That performance was one of the worst – if not the worst – of the Jurgen Klopp era and the Reds need to respond tonight.

Schreuder spoke at his pre-match press conference about the game, and was asked if he had spoken to his predecessor Erik ten Hag about how to take on Liverpool.

Schreuder speaks out on Liverpool v Ajax

When asked if he had spoken to Ten Hag, he said: “No, I haven’t had any contact with him. I did see the game. Then I saw certain things that would also fit for us. We mainly try to do it in our own way.

“I think it’s a big compliment to the people within the club, who have worked very hard to put together a strong squad again.

“I think we have signed some good players and there will also be some young players in the starting line-up. That’s good too. That also suits Ajax, to sign good players and give young players a chance.

“That’s the most important thing for me. That you have players in the squad who want to improve themselves. They also have to adapt a little bit to the philosophy, but they work very hard. That is the basis to get a successful team for me. That they work hard every day, want to learn and win, because in the end that’s what it’s all about.”

Ten Hag of course earned a win over Liverpool with Manchester United last month, using a high-tempo counter-attacking style.

That was despite being at home at Old Trafford but tonight’s game will be different, not least because it takes place at Anfield.

Liverpool will be determined to recover from their experience in Naples, but it will be interesting to see if Ajax take anything from the formula which Ten Hag used.
