Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang put Norwich City’s defence to the sword on Wednesday with two goals as Arsenal cruised to a third consecutive win – and an Arsenal teammate has urged him to sign a new contract on Instagram.
The Gunners came into the match with plenty of confidence after a 2-0 Premier League win over Southampton and then securing a place in the FA Cup semi-finals with a 2-1 victory over Sheffield United.
That confidence saw them dominate Norwich from start to finish. For the second league game in a row, an Arsenal striker tackled a goalkeeper and scored – this time Aubameyang on Tim Krul.
Aubameyang then turned provider as Granit Xhaka swept home, before another Norwich mistake saw Aubameyang net his second – and his 22nd of the season. New signing Cedric Soares scored on his debut from distance.
A 4-0 win, then, and after the match Mikel Arteta spoke with confidence that captain Aubameyang wants to stay at Arsenal. That is, despite his contract ending next summer – and interest from Barcelona, among others.
Now, commenting on his Instagram post, Ainsley Maitland-Niles has gone somewhat public by urging Aubameyang to “sign the contract” on the same day that Bukayo Saka put pen to paper on new terms at the Emirates.
