Agents claim Ruben Amorim made the worst Premier League signing of the summer for Man Utd

Manchester United splashed the cash on the worst signing of the summer, agents believe.

Ruben Amorim spent over £200million to strengthen his squad after leading United to a dismal 15th-placed finish in the Premier League last season, as well as a defeat against Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final in May.

In came big-name forwards Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo, while goalkeeper Senne Lammens and young left-back Diego Leon also joined.

But the verdict on one of the recent arrivals among football experts is not good.

Agents say Benjamin Sesko was the worst signing

Agents, of course, make exorbitant amounts of money from their knowledge of the sport’s best and worst players.

It is especially damning, then, that they have chosen Benjamin Sesko, who cost United £74million from RB Leipzig, as the worst summer signing in the whole of the Premier League.

“Way too much money and much too soon,” one representative told The Athletic.

Meanwhile, another brutally added: “They were pressurised into making that signing.”

A third also savaged Manchester United for moving for a player with “not much of a pedigree” and spending so much on him.

In total, 20 agents were asked for their choice, with six responding with Sesko, placing him ahead of James Trafford’s switch to Manchester City. So, while he has scored two goals in his last two Premier League matches, the 22-year-old clearly still has a lot to prove.

Benjamin Sesko praised by Slovenia team-mate

Sesko is currently on international duty with Slovenia, but drew a blank in their goalless draw with Kosovo in World Cup qualifying on Friday night.

He was criticised by the national team manager Matjaz Kek for lacking ruthlessness in front of goal, despite his promising purple patch at Old Trafford.

However, his Slovenia team-mate Zan Karnicnik has defended the frontman, recognising he needs time to adjust to his new surroundings in the Premier League.

Karnicnik told Ekipa: “He always comes to the national team with joy, he always gives his best. It’s true that after the transfer, everything was maybe new for him too.

“We know that the Premier League is the highest level, that he has to get used to everything that happens there. From the media to everything else. The pressure is very high.

“But he also showed in the last two matches in England what a quality footballer he is. He started scoring and I wish him all the best in the future.”
