There is no question that Illan Meslier can be incredibly proud of his form since Leeds United’s promotion to the Premier League.
The Frenchman has already broken the league’s record for most clean sheets from a goalkeeper before their 21st birthday. And, while it has not always been easy for the youngster, he looks to have the potential to be a key player at Elland Road for years to come.
He has certainly vindicated the club’s decision to make his move permanent last year. According to Ouest France, he cost around £5 million.
And perhaps, now is the time for Leeds to look at initiating contract talks with Meslier – particularly in light of comments made by his agent this week.
Xavier Fleury told the LUFC Fan Zone Podcast that Meslier is incredibly happy at Elland Road. But his comments also highlighted the need for the club to keep progressing.
“Illan is starting at Leeds. He loves the club. Perhaps in one, two seasons, if you have a club like Real Madrid that knock on the door – who knows? If Leeds keep the manager and Orta, the president could be right – they could be in the Champions League.
“If Leeds are in the Champions League, Illan can win a title with Leeds – winning a title with Leeds is more beautiful than with Juventus, Real Madrid or Bayern. Right now, it would be a bad idea to join a big club, and sit on the bench.”
Meslier agreed a three-year contract when he signed permanently (via BBC Sport). So he is now not far away from entering the final two years of his deal.
That could potentially prove to be a precarious situation for the Whites. So while he is happy, it surely makes sense to work to tie him down for longer.
Meslier should only get better having already proved that he is good enough to play at the highest level. Leeds should therefore, ensure that they capitalise while he is dreaming of success with his current club.
