Agent claims Celtic were interested in Argentina international striker Lucas Alario this summer

Celtic have reportedly shown an interest in signing the Bayer Leverkusen striker Lucas Alario this summer, according to the player’s agent.

Celtic have been looking for striking options throughout the summer with doubts over Leigh Griffiths fitness and the long-term future of Odsonne Edouard.

In the end, the Bhoys secured the signature of Albian Ajeti from West Ham United. However, it appears that at some point they made their interest known in the Argentine frontman, along with Benfica.

However, as his agent Pedro Aldave has made clear, Celtic are not an option as he does not want to play in the Scottish league.

“I had (Oscar) Cardozo at Benfica for 7 years, I have an excellent relationship with the club,” Aldave told Europa Calcio. “Alario is a suitable profile for the Portuguese club but I don’t know if it could be satisfactory from an economic point of view. At the moment they are just rumors. The only team that has shown interest in Alario is Celtic, but he wants to play in a competitive league.”

The 27-year-old would have undoubtedly been an eye-catching signature for Celtic. The former River Plate talent has scored three goals in seven caps for the Argentina national team.

He joined German side Leverkusen in 2017 and impressed in his first two seasons in the Bundesliga. However, he found himself in and out of the team throughout last season, despite scoring 12 goals in 36 games.

With that in mind he is looking for a new challenge and Celtic appeared ready to give him that chance.

But Alario has unfortunately deemed a move to Parkhead beneath him.
