An agent involved in discussing a potential move for Mohamed Simakan over the summer has told Calciomercato that Aston Villa wanted the defender, and backed the Villans to be amongst those to make a fresh bid in January.
Simakan looks to be one of the most exciting defensive prospects in Europe. The 20-year-old has made eight Ligue 1 appearances this term for Strasbourg.
He was linked with a move to the Premier League over the summer. The Sun reported in late September that West Ham wanted the £20 million-rated youngster.
But it now appears that it was actually one of the Hammers’ top flight rivals who made the biggest play for the 20-year-old while the window was open.
Francesco Di Frisco – who was involved in negotiations as AC Milan attempted to agree a deal – claimed that Villa were keen. And he hinted that he expected Dean Smith’s side to keep him on their radar.
“There were many teams on Simakan: Lyon, Aston Villa and Borussia Dortmund, especially the Germans tried,” he told Calciomercato.
“In January, I think these clubs, including Milan, will try to push again. The boy has picked up where he left off, showing his qualities and it is possible that his admirers will also increase ”
It would probably be no surprise to see Villa target more defenders in the future. They have made an outstanding start to the season. And Ezri Konsa appears to have taken his game to another level alongside Tyrone Mings.
But fans may have some concerns about the depth they have at the back. Bjorn Engels endured a mixed first season at Villa Park. And Kortney Hause has not kicked on in the same way Konsa has.
Signing Simakan could be a masterstroke therefore. But if they do register a fresh interest, it would appear that they will not have a clear run towards securing his signature.
