Arsenal passed up on the chance to sign Liverpool star Sadio Mane back in 2012, according to the Sun.

The list of players the Gunners nearly signed under Arsene Wenger is long to the point of parody and now the Sun report that Mane’s name can be added to it.

They claim that Arsenal could have had Mane for just £4m back in 2012, when he was in the early part of his career with Metz, after the London Olympic games, four years before he eventually joined Liverpool from Southampton.

It barely needs pointing out that Mane is an elite forward now, carrying Liverpool’s bid forward and earning £100,000 per week, according to Spotrac.

By 2012, Arsenal were steadfastly refusing to spend big money on elite talent and frequently shedding their best players window in, window out.

That means that there was extra emphasis on Wenger to get it right in terms of spotting the stars of the future, and getting them to the Emirates Stadium on the cheap, using the carrot of more gametime compared to other clubs across Europe.

By the end of his reign, he wouldn’t manage to do that and although hindsight is a wonderful thing, it doesn’t mean that Arsenal wouldn’t love to have Mane now.
