The agent of Italian midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo has been discussing the player’s summer, amid links with a move to Tottenham Hotspur.
Tottenham were heavily linked with a potential move for the Italian talent during the summer. The Mirror claimed that Tottenham were targeting a £40 million move for the player. Corriere dello Sport then suggested Tottenham were willing to swap Toby Alderweireld in a player-plus-cash deal in order to lure Zaniolo to London.
However, according to his agent Claudio Vigorelli, it was never truly on the cards. Speaking to TuttoMercatoWeb, he confirmed that Roma never had any intention of selling the midfield playmaker.
“There was never tension. Roma wanted to make Nicolo feel important, for which now the difficulty comes because he knows that he must do even more seriously. There has been interest from many sides, but Roma has never wanted to sell Zaniolo.”
Tottenham were linked with several midfield maestros over the summer. Bruno Fernandes of Sporting Lisbon appeared to be a favoured choice as a potential replacement for Christian Eriksen but no deal could be made for his services.
In the end, Tottenham snapped up Giovani Lo Celso from Real Betis who, unfortunately, has just picked up an injury to hamper his start to life at the club.
As for Zaniolo, he will surely be a player Tottenham keep tabs on going forward. The 20-year-old signed a new contract at Roma in August so it is clear the Italian side see him as a big part of their future.
But Tottenham will undoubtedly have him in their sights as a potential recruit in the years to come.
