Agbonlahor jokes Aston Villa should pull off-Buendia style deal for Euro 2020 star urged to join Arsenal by Gabriel
Arsenal defender Gabriel urged Portugal midfielder Renato Sanches to join the Gunners this summer on Instagram – and Gabby Agbonlahor has reacted. He has joked that Aston Villa should hijack a move and beat Arsenal to the punch again – having done so with Emi Buendia.
Sanches, 23, has starred for Portugal at Euro 2020 and while his country exited at the last 16 stage – he has certainly caught the eye. It comes after rejuvenating his career at French club Lille, following a tricky few years on the books at Bayern Munich. That included a strange loan at Swansea.
The midfielder is being linked with the Premier League. 90Min claim Arsenal are keeping an eye on Sanches, who cost Lille in the region of £21.5million. Earlier this week, Gabriel posted on his Instagram – of course, his former Lille teammate – urging him to join Arsenal. Sanches replied.
What has Villa icon Agbonlahor said as Arsenal urged to sign Sanches?
Ask most Arsenal fans which position needs strengthening the most this season, and most will tell you a midfield partner for Thomas Partey. Lucas Torreira, Matteo Guendouzi and Granit Xhaka are all expected to leave. Mo Elneny has been indifferent. Mikel Arteta is insistent on playing 4-2-3-1.
So, Partey needs a progressive midfielder alongside him. One that allows the Ghana ace to sit, and be a box-to-box midfielder. Sanches showed at Euro 2020 he would be ideal. But Villa could do with him too, and Agbonlahor has joked that Villa should hijack a move to get him.
Of course, Buendia was strongly linked with Arsenal – but Villa moved quickly to get him. Agbonlahor suggested another example of that.
