Agbonlahor claims Tottenham need a player like Martin Odegaard

Gabby Agbonlahor has told talkSPORT that Tottenham Hotspur would be better off if they had someone like Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard in their squad.

Spurs are going to be a fascinating team to watch in January. Antonio Conte’s men sit inside the top-four of the Premier League, and they are through to the knockout stages of the Champions League.

However, that does not tell the full story. Tottenham have not been impressive for much of this season. They are moving in the right direction under Conte. But there is surely little doubt that there is still a lot of work for the Italian to do.

Agbonlahor thinks Tottenham need someone like Odegaard

And with that, fans will be hoping that a few new faces arrive in January. And for both Ray Parlour and Agbonlahor, a creative midfielder should be near the top of Tottenham’s wishlist.

In fact, Agbonlahor suggested that they need someone in the mould of the Gunners skipper.

“They need that ball player, don’t they, who can see that pass. Creativity, I think they’re just lacking a little bit when they play Hojbjerg and Bentancur. Bentancur has been excellent for Spurs, he really has. Hojbjerg’s a very efficient player, but they’re lacking that little bit of creativity with the strikers they have,” Parlour told talkSPORT.

“Don’t think it would be nice to get a four, two and then, an Odegaard, like Arsenal have got, someone who can get on the ball, a number 10 who can feed the front three as well. It would be nice for Spurs to have that option,” Agbonlahor responded.

Agbonlahor’s comments are unlikely to go down well with Tottenham fans.

But the supporters would not say no to a more creative player coming in next month. Only two players have provided more than two assists in the Premier League this season. And neither of those players – Dejan Kulusevski and Ivan Perisic – have managed to make it into double figures for starts so far.

Odegaard only has two as well. But he has also contributed six goals for the league leaders. Harry Kane is the only Tottenham player to have had a direct hand in more goals this season.

However, that does not tell the full story.

Odegaard has made 53 progressive passes this season, according to FBRef. That leaves him 19th in the Premier League in that particular area.

But remarkably, the man who sits in second place – with 78 – is Hojbjerg. The Dane also has the advantage over Odegaard when it comes to passes into the final third, having made 83. Odegaard meanwhile, is on 43.

Again, that does not mean that Tottenham have the more creative player. But it does help highlight that Spurs’ two midfield stalwarts bring a lot more to the table than simply providing the system with balance.
