Celtic were plotting to sign Newcastle United starlet Sean Longstaff on a pre-contract agreement in January.
According to The Chronicle, Celtic sent scouts to watch young Newcastle duo Longstaff and Freddie Woodman in action.
Both players had contracts expiring in summer 2019 and it could have been a bargain swoop for Celtic.
But Longstaff has now signed a new four-year contract extension at Newcastle, effectively ruling Celtic out of a move.
With the 21-year-old not likely to move to Celtic Park, should Brendan Rodgers instead consider his team-mate Dan Barlaser?
The young midfielder has a lot of potential, although he is yet to make his breakthrough at Newcastle.
A fresh start at Celtic could be appealing for the Turkey youth international.

At the moment, Barlaser is at Accrington Stanley on loan, where he has impressed with two goals in 17 appearances from central midfield.
He has made three senior appearances for the Magpies, although all of them have come in the cup.
And with game time looking limited under Rafa Benitez, a switch to Celtic could kick-start the youngster’s career.
The 21-year-old plays either as a central midfielder or out wide, making him a useful versatile option.
And while he is far from the finished product, Celtic could tap into Barlaser’s potential after missing out on Longstaff.
