After a whirlwind 24 hours, it now seems very clear that Anthony Gordon won’t be leaving Newcastle United for his boyhood club, Liverpool.

Given Newcastle’s PSR concerns over the past weekend, faced with a deficit of £60m in their accounts according to reports, Liverpool seemed to sense an opportunity with Gordon.

Newcastle will be under pressure to return to European football next season, they’ll need to match the ambition of Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak who have both chosen to stay.

And Eddie Howe’s side simply couldn’t enter the new season facing a significant points deduction.

Therefore, Liverpool arrived with their interest in Gordon, a player who could thrive back on Merseyside in Arne Slot’s new era.

But given Newcastle solved their PSR issues by selling exciting youngsters Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson to Brighton and Nottingham Forest respectively, they were ultimately under no pressure to sell.

Telegraph Sport have now been sharing some more details of those negotiations, though, explaining that Joe Gomez was offered to Newcastle as well as Jarell Quansah during talks.

Liverpool talked about offering Joe Gomez to Newcastle in Anthony Gordon deal

When discussing a deal, Newcastle were not impressed by the price Liverpool were willing to pay for Gordon – who seemed to be seeking a bargain.

And to that end, the aforementioned report confirms that Liverpool talked about sending either Quansah or Gomez to St James’ Park, a deal that never got off the ground.

Liverpool didn’t submit an official bid, and Gordon is now expected to stay at Newcastle.

And whilst Newcastle would be understandably reluctant to lose Gordon, one of their key performers, a deal for Gomez may have been slightly tempting.

The England international, currently at Euro 2024, was ‘exceptional’ for Klopp at times last season playing in a number of positions.

Gomez’s impressive form at left-back seems to have inspired the decision to take him to Germany – making Gareth Southgate’s reluctance to use the defender quite puzzling.

But either way, it seems as if Gomez will be available for Slot as expected for the new season, who will still be hoping to score his first Liverpool goal.

And in a summer in which Liverpool may need to recruit a defender, it’s probably sensible that both Quansah and Gomez remain.
