James Maddison suffered what appeared to be a serious injury as Tottenham faced Newcastle on Sunday.
The England international looked to be in agony as he hobbled off the pitch in the dying stages of the friendly, which finished 1-1 after goals from Brennan Johnson and Harvey Barnes.
Thomas Frank called it a “brutal” moment for Maddison and added the injury looks to be a “bad” one for the Tottenham No.10 – who experienced problems with the same knee last season.
Spurs already wanted another attacking midfielder even before this incident, having tried to sign Morgan Gibbs-White from Nottingham Forest until he opted to pen a new contract.
Therefore, we think the injury to James Maddison could now see Tottenham advance their interest in another target – Bilal El Khannouss.
Tottenham could make bid for Bilal El Khannouss
TBR Football recently revealed that Tottenham are monitoring El Khannouss closely after Leicester were relegated to the Championship last season, a development which activated his £24.5m release clause.
It remains to be seen what happens for certain with Maddison now on crutches, but we think Spurs could firm up their interest in the Morocco international by submitting an official bid.
Newcastle are also keen on El Khannouss – who Crystal Palace are watching too – so Tottenham do have competition breathing down their neck in this particular transfer saga.
Sources have told TBR Football that the Leicester No.11 is viewed across Europe as “one of the finest technicians of his generation” – and his ability in that No.10 role would go some way to replacing Maddison while he is sidelined.
The respected Football Talent Scout has even compared El Khannouss to the likes of Christian Eriksen and Kevin De Bruyne, due to his unerring inventiveness in an attacking midfield role.
It is even possible that Thomas Frank now signs two new attacking midfielders
As aforesaid, Tottenham wanted Gibbs-White before Maddison hurt his knee, so the arrival of two attacking midfielders cannot be ruled out.
TBR Football understand Spurs like Conor Gallagher – who proved he can shine in a No.10 role while on loan at Crystal Palace – so the England international could be an option.
Lucas Bergvall was also spotted playing in a No.10 role during training, so the Swede represents an internal option for Frank just in case his budget does not stretch to sign two new attacking midfielders this summer.
