Liverpool certainly aren’t resting on their laurels after winning the title last season.
After years of savvy, shrewd recruitment – both in terms of incomings and outgoings – the financial floodgates have finally opened at Anfield, with Liverpool splashing the cash to build on their status as Premier League winners.
Liverpool are close to signing Hugo Ekitike in a £69m move from Eintracht Frankfurt, having already spent £116m on Florian Wirtz, £40m on Milos Kerkez and £30m on Jeremie Frimpong.
Now, a story from Galicia Press states that Liverpool could soon make a move for Ezri Konsa – although Crystal Palace may have a say.
Liverpool are monitoring Ezri Konsa
The Spanish news outlet now claim that Crystal Palace and Aston Villa are considering moves for Spain international Oscar Mingueza, in preparation of potentially losing Marc Guehi or Konsa respectively.
Galicia Press believe Liverpool are prioritising a move for the Crystal Palace No.6 this summer as they aim to find a replacement for Jarell Quansah.
However, it is made clear that Liverpool will have to ‘dig deep in their pockets’ to lure Guehi away from Selhurst Park, so a move for Konsa is viewed as the ‘cheaper’ alternative.
TBR Football understand Aston Villa even showed an interest in Mingueza back in January, holding talks with Celta Vigo over a deal.
Aston Villa are facing financial restrictions in the market this summer after missing out on UEFA Champions League football, with PSR (Premier League Profit & Sustainability Rules) concerns possibly resulting in a major sale in this window.
Crystal Palace, on the other hand, do not have any PSR issues, and despite the fact Guehi only has 11 months remaining on his contract, those at Selhurst Park are seemingly happy to lose the England international for free unless their £50m asking price is met.
Liverpool have admired Ezri Konsa for years
Bringing Konsa to Anfield would signal the end of a saga lasting over seven years.
A story from the Mirror back in January 2018 claimed that Liverpool wanted to sign the man born in Newham while he was still playing for Charlton – having taken Joe Gomez from the south Londoners back in 2015.
However, it was Brentford who eventually won the race for Konsa, agreeing a £2.5m deal with Charlton in June 2018, before a £12m move to Aston Villa followed in July 2019.
The 27-year-old has since won 11 caps for England and developed into one of the best defenders in the Premier League, so it is no wonder Liverpool remain interested.
