After electric start, Jake Hastie’s Rotherham United loan is slipping

Rangers fans would have been pretty excited with the start to life that Jake Hastie had at Rotherham United this season.

The young Scottish winger was brought to Ibrox in the summer, costing a reported (Daily Record) £350,000 in compensation, from Motherwell.

Steven Gerrard clearly felt there was potential in the teenager and even handed him a first-team debut as Rangers defeated St Joseph’s 6-0 in the Europa League.

But Rangers are well stocked in the wide areas so Gerrard decided it was best the youngster headed out on loan. He joined the South Yorkshire side on a deal until the end of the season.

Initially, it looked as though Hastie was going to take League One by storm.

He scored three goals in his first three games for the club and was receiving praise from manager Paul Warne.

However, things have recently taken a downward turn. Hastie’s performances began to dip and after a poor display in a 2-1 loss to Oxford United, he found himself benched for the game with Ipswich Town on the 23rd of October.

Hastie has not started a league game since and appears to have slipped behind fellow newbie Chiedozie Ogbene in the pecking order.

The positive news for Hastie is that Ogbene was sent off in The Millers’ last outing. Therefore, the Rangers talent might get a chance to win back his starting spot against MK Dons this weekend.

If not, this once-promising loan spell could continue to turn sour for the Rangers talent.
