After dominating Diego Costa, Tottenham have to prioritise Dayot Upamecano – TBR View

Dayot Upamecano put on a superb display last night for RB Leipzig as he dominated Diego Costa and Tottenham have to ensure he is now their number one priority this summer.

Linked with Spurs earlier this year, Upamecano has become one of the most sought-after defenders on the continent thanks to his displays over in Germany. Indeed, the Mirror claimed back in April Real Madrid had joined Jose Mourinho’s side in being interested.

Indeed, along with Spurs, north London rivals, Arsenal, are also said to be actively monitoring his situation.

And last night, as Leipzig took on Atletico Madrid, Upamecano delivered a performance beyond his years to keep Diego Costa out of the game.

It was a performance that caught the eye, too, with former Spurs midfielder, Jermaine Jenas, singing the praises of the Frenchman.

“When you look at Upamecano going up against Diego Costa today, it was like no point Costa even being there”, Jenas said. (Daily Mail).

Rio Ferdinand, who was watching along with Jenas, was also blown away by how good the Leipzig star was. So could it be, then, that Spurs need to make Upamecano their number one priority this summer?

Jan Vertonghen is gone, there’s definitely an opening at the club

While Eric Dier has tied himself down to a new deal with the club, Jan Vertonghen has left, leaving a gaping hole in the backline for Spurs.

Surely, then, Mourinho has a case to make to Daniel Levy when it comes to landing Upamecano? These sorts of players don’t come along very often and for someone who is 21 to so easily marshall an experienced striker like Costa, it showed his class in abundance.

Sometimes in football, teams need to make the first move and not wait it out. With Upcamecano, Spurs should do just that and take the plunge.

Judging on last night’s evidence, it might just be one of the best signings they ever make. Even at a reported £60m, the French defender could well turn out to be worth it in the long-run.
