After difficult year Tom Pearce can put himself in shop window at Toulon

Leeds United’s left-back struggled this season under Marcelo Bielsa.

A year ago and Tom Pearce would have been looking forward to a potential breakthrough season at Leeds United.

He was being linked with Premier League teams Everton and Bournemouth. In June, he eventually signed a new deal at Leeds, keeping him at the club until 2022.

Even when Leeds decided to bring in Barry Douglas he would have felt his chances of being the alternative were high.

However, Pearce is coming off the back of a difficult season at Elland Road. On two occasions this season he was subbed in and then out of the same game by Marcelo Bielsa. Clearly, he was not impressing the Argentine.

Pearce eventually headed to League One side Scunthorpe United on loan in January. That did not pan out either, as the Iron suffered relegation.

Now, the Yorkshire Evening Post is reporting that Leeds will listen to offers for the player this summer. Considering the interest from the Premier League a year ago it is quite a turnaround for the young left-back.

However, there was some good news this week for the young defender. Pearce has been included in the England Under-20 squad aiming to defend their Toulon title in France this summer.

Pearce played for England in their win last summer, and this season they are aiming for their fourth triumph in a row. It will be slightly more difficult, with plenty of their potential options away with the England under-21s.

Pearce, who will battle with Derby County youngster Max Lowe for the starting left-back role, just use the chance in Toulon to put himself in the transfer market this summer.

Bielsa, it seems, is simply not a fan of Pearce but he is still a very talented young player who could thrive at another club. Toulon gives him the chance to prove that point.
