West Ham United have agreed a deal to sign Roberto this summer. The Spaniard arrives on a free transfer from Espanyol. After an impressive career with the likes of Benfica, Real Zaragoza, and Olympiakos, the Spaniard is now ready to push Lukasz Fabianski for the number one spot at West Ham.
He arrives as a replacement for countryman Adrian. The fan favourite’s contract with the Hammers expired this summer and he is also now a free agent.
But in Roberto, West Ham fans have a player with Adrian’s backing. The departing West Ham stopper expressed his goodwill toward his replacement when talking to Marca this week.
“I have a good relationship with Roberto and we’ve talked about it. I wished him all the best when he signed. He’s going to a great club with tremendous fans and I hope he can show how good a goalkeeper he is. I wish him the best.”
West Ham fans generally have good memories of Adrian and will be gutted to see that he is leaving the club.
In his six years with West Ham, he has developed into a respected stopper and even won his first call-up to the Spanish national team.
Roberto will now hope to achieve a similar rapport with the West Ham fans. With it unlikely he will usurp last season’s player of the year Fabianski.
But if Adrian is backing him, then the West Ham faithful will undoubtedly give the 33-year-old every chance to succeed.
