Adam Webster is a talent but Newcastle United do not need any new centre-backs

According to The Mirror, Adam Webster is a target for Newcastle United. The Bristol City defender is wanted by four Premier League clubs, including Newcastle.

Rafa Benitez will battle Burnley, Southampton and Watford for the 24-year-old. Webster enjoyed an impressive season at Ashton Gate and it is no surprise to see Premier League clubs circling.

But this should not be Newcastle’s transfer priority. Even though Webster is a talented young centre-half, this is not a position which needs addressing.

The Magpies have a number of centre-backs already on their books. And adding Webster to their squad would be an unnecessary use of their money when other positions need urgent attention.

Jamaal Lascelles is the Newcastle skipper and he is one of their options at the back. And vice-captain Paul Dummett can also play at centre-back, especially if Benitez deploys a back three.

Fabian Schar joined last summer and he has been a hit at St James’ Park. The popular Swiss defender has impressed with his ball-playing central defensive style.

Florian Lejeune recovered from injury last season to add another option. Meanwhile, last summer’s signing Federico Fernandez played well when given the chance. And Newcastle still have Ciaran Clark on their books.

Webster has plenty of potential and could become a top Premier League player in the near future. But Newcastle simply do not need him this summer unless several players leave.
