Adam Lallana has told BT Sport (broadcast on 27/10; 22:03) that Xherdan Shaqiri is a world class player after watching his display in Liverpool’s Champions League win on Tuesday night.

The Reds have started the group-stages with back to back wins. But it was another hard-fought victory for Jurgen Klopp’s men.

Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah scored in the second-half to see off Midtjylland at Anfield. And one of the players who played a key role in the opening goal was Shaqiri.

The Swiss played a delicious no-look pass through to Trent Alexander-Arnold, who then found Jota. It was a moment of real quality in what was arguably an excellent overall performance from the 29-year-old.

It was Shaqiri’s second start of the season. And he had only featured in two Liverpool games this term before the 2-0 win. But Lallana suggested that he is a player who has the potential to play an important role for the Reds if given an opportunity.

“It’s great to see Shaqiri getting a bit of form,” he told BT Sport. “He’s stayed fit, top, top player. World class.

“He’s got a great left foot on him and you see him there picking up clever spaces. He’s always there for the assist. It’s a wand of a left foot. He’s got a goal in the locker as well.”

Shaqiri is almost unlucky that he is tasked with trying to land a spot in one of the most impressive attacking units in world football.

He may therefore, already be preparing to bide his time once again before he gets a further opportunity.

But there is surely no question that he could not have done too much more to stake a claim for more game-time with his display on Tuesday.
