‘Actually’: TalkSPORT pundit explains why he thinks Everton’s 4-0 loss to MLS side could be good for Lampard
Everton suffered a 4-0 defeat to MLS outfit Minnesota United in a friendly yesterday and despite the heavy loss, TalkSPORT pundit Trevor Sinclair thinks it could actually be a good thing for Frank Lampard.
The Toffees boss started nine players that could easily start the first game of the Premier League season, including the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Abdoulaye Doucoure and new-signing James Tarkowski.
But Lampard’s side found themselves 3-0 down to Minnesota at half-time in what was a worrying pre-season performance.
Everton also lost to Arsenal last weekend and despite the most recent defeat to the MLS side, former Manchester City and West Ham United man Sinclair took an alternative view to the game.
TalkSPORT pundit thinks Everton loss could be good for Lampard
The former Premier League winger did say that it was a ‘really bad’ result, but explained why he thinks the Toffees boss can use this to his advantage.
“Actually, it could be a good thing for Frank because it might give him a little bit of ammunition to get into them and say ‘come on, I need leaders to step up, you’ve got to start understanding’, it could be good,” he said.
“Or put an arm around a few who are struggling. It gives you the opportunity to work with individuals. As a group you’ve got to deal with that because it’s 4-0 and it’s not acceptable for Everton Football Club to go over there and get beat as they did.”
Sinclair played with Lampard at West Ham and for England during his playing days. And he said his former teammate will have to be tougher on his more experienced players after such a heavy defeat.
He added: “Little arm around some of the younger players, you know Anthony Gordon had a fantastic breakthrough season last year, was he involved? I’m not sure but if he didn’t play as well as he has done, that might be a good opportunity to put your arm around him and say listen, we believe in you, we expect a massive season from you.
“Then the other players who are more experienced, getting into them. That’s not good enough, you’ve got to show these young lads.”
Lampard may be a bit concerned with his side’s pre-season form as they’ve suffered two losses now without scoring a goal. But it’ll be important that his team don’t dwell on the results too much as they are meaningless when it comes to the season.
Everton have only added James Tarkowski to their side so far this summer and while he’s a great addition to the backline, Lampard will be hoping to get some more players through the door before the season gets underway.
