‘Absolutely vital’: Jamie Carragher seriously impressed by £50k-a-week Aston Villa player’s cameo against Brighton

Jamie Carragher was seriously impressed by Ashley Young’s cameo display for Aston Villa today on Sky Sports

Villa fell behind inside the first minute of today’s clash with Brighton after a mistake by Emiliano Martinez and Douglas Luiz.

The goalkeeper’s pass to the Brazilian was slightly short and Mac Allister latched onto the ball before finishing calmly.

But Villa fought back and got themselves back on level terms in the 20th minute after John McGinn was forced down in the area.

Danny Ings made no mistake from the spot and he went on to put his side ahead in the 54th minute. Luiz made up for his earlier error by dispossessing Mac Allister and Ings produced a cool finish.

Young was introduced into the action in the 69th minute as he replaced Jacob Ramsey to try and see out the win.

And Carragher was really impressed with Young’s composed display from right wing-back.

Carragher seriously impressed by Young

Speaking on Sky Sports’ coverage of the game, Carragher feels Young stifled Brighton’s threat down the left-hand side.

“That’s why that role since Ashley Young has come on has been absolutely vital,” he said.

“Two or three times now, he’s reverted the danger for Aston Villa by just using his experience.”

Young was one of the few bright sparks under Steven Gerrard as he put in some solid displays from full-back.

The 37-year-old is yet to start under Emery but the £50,000-a-week ace will have impressed his new boss today.

Today’s win was a real statement from Villa as they performed brilliantly against an in-form Brighton side.

It was their first away win of the season and means they will head into the World Cup in twelfth place.

Emery has now won his first two Premier League games as Villa boss and the Spaniard will be delighted with his side’s performances over the past week.
