Sky Sports pundit Andy Hinchcliffe lauded Newcastle United defender Dan Burn for his “absolutely superb” opener against Leicester City.

The Magpies edged closer to a first major trophy since 1969 on Tuesday night when they reached the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Newcastle ran out 2-0 winners over Brendan Rodgers’ side at St James’ Park, with Burn and Joelinton netting for Eddie Howe’s side.

The £13million defender opened the scoring on the hour mark. Joelinton sent his teammate into the box, and he curled a great finish into the far corner.

It was a great moment for Burn, his colleagues and the Newcastle fans, who saw one of their own get his first goal for his boyhood club.

Hinchcliffe also loved what he saw, telling Sky Sports: “It’s the most unlikely goal scorer but the finish is absolutely superb. Placement, precision.”

Joelinton then got on the scoresheet himself with another fine finish into the far corner for Newcastle.

Leicester couldn’t muster up a reply, and so the Magpies proceeded into the semi-finals of the competition.

Times are changing at Newcastle. And it’s not even a case of ‘slowly but surely’, as the Magpies have progressed so much in the last 12 months.

This time last year, they were battling against relegation. Now, they’re fighting for a top-four finish and are in the final four of a domestic cup competition.

It’s their first trip to the last four of a cup competition since the FA Cup in 2005, and their first EFL Cup semi-final since they were runners-up in 1976.

Newcastle deserve huge credit for doing things the right way, and signing the right players.

Burn is a key example of this, a solid player with plenty of Premier League experience and, of course, a love for Newcastle that’ll always give him that extra edge.
