Aston Villa and England star, Jack Grealish, has come in for some bizarre criticism from former England and Manchester United defender, Paul Parker.
Grealish was in fine form for England over the international break. The Aston Villa man helped England to an easy win over Iceland, while he was the best Three Lions player in the loss against Belgium.
However, as reported by the Evening Standard, Parker spoke to Eurosport and launched a scathing attack on both Grealish and those who claim he’s as good as Paul Gascoigne.
“As a country, we have created this idea of ‘Jack Grealish is going to be the greatest ever English player. Where has that come from? It’s absolutely ridiculous,” Parker said.
“I just don’t get the hype around him to be perfectly honest. Then you get the ones who come up and say ‘ah, he reminds us of Gazza’. Please don’t do that. Someone put a stat up about what he’s done and what he’s achieved already and captioned it ‘Andres Iniesta hadn’t done that at his age’. Please don’t go down that road. I don’t know why we keep doing it.”
The comments from Parker go against the grain in terms of Grealish of late. The Villa star has been exceptional for Dean Smith this season and has finally been given the same trust by Gareth Southgate.
A strange, strange rant this and completely wide of the mark – TBR View
Of course, everyone is entitled to an opinion when it comes to football so Parker obviously feels passionately about the subject of Grealish.
But in all honesty, it’s just a very odd assessment to make one someone who is in the form of their life for Villa and taking that form onto the international stage.
Grealish won’t mind. The comparisons to Gazza are a bit questionable at times but he is in the same mold of player. Hopefully, we can revisit this comment in six months’ time and Parker might change his tune.
