'Absolutely huge': Alan Shearer says Liverpool have done something that'll make them 'frightening'

Alan Shearer has praised Liverpool for the “absolutely huge” achievement in tying Mohamed Salah down to a new contract.

The Reds star’s future was the subject of speculation for much of last season and heading towards the summer transfer window.

But in July, Liverpool delivered the news that fans were waiting for – Salah had signed a new long-term contract at Anfield.

The Egypt international was unplayable in the first half of last season, though he lost form somewhat in the second half.

Admittedly, Salah did have an incredibly taxing season for club and country.

But now, with a new season about to begin, Shearer feels Salah has a “big weight off his mind” regarding his future.

Liverpool have lost one key forward in Sadio Mane, but they’ve also brought in the incredibly talented Darwin Nunez.

Shearer, writing on BBC Sport about Liverpool and Manchester City, believes the Reds front line is no less potent than in 2021-22.

Indeed, the Premier League legend feels Salah may even be playing better now, a “frightening” proposition for opponents.

“Liverpool also have a new-look forward line with Sadio Mane leaving and Darwin Nunez joining from Benfica,” he wrote.

“But I don’t think their attack will be any less potent than last season.

“A big reason for that is Mohamed Salah signing a new contract, which is absolutely huge for them and will be a big weight off his mind too.

“We might even see Salah playing better now, which is a frightening prospect for Premier League defences.

“But I still think City will have the edge come the end of the season.”
