‘Absolutely brilliant’: Sky Sports pundit raves about £4m ‘warrior’ Everton reportedly want

A player reportedly sought after by Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti has made Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicholas’ Premier League Team of the Season so far.

According to a report in The Mirror from December, the Toffees are interested in Sheffield United defender John Egan, who has been one of the Blades’ best performers this season.

Egan has played in all but one of United’s Premier League games this season as Chris Wilder’s charges made a mockery of certain negative pre-season predictions to sit seventh in the table.

Given his impressive displays, it’s little surprise that other clubs have been linked with the 27-year-old, with Everton potentially looking to bolster their defensive ranks.

“The guy I have been raving about all season, I know Sheffield United play a back three, is John Egan, as he stands out for me,” Nicholas wrote on Sky Sports.

“He has been absolutely brilliant. He is brave, he is a warrior, and he has authority within his back three. He has a fabulous goalkeeper behind him, but if he has to deal with it, then he will.

“The big buys of Harry Maguire and others were all focused on, but there were plenty of Blades players who I did not think would cut it. His consistency at this level has looked so comfortable, so Egan goes in.”

TBR View:

Egan has been superb this season and for him to be named in Nicholas’ TOTS XI alongside Virgil van Dijk is testament to just how well he has done.

Commanding in the air and strong on the ball, the £7,500-a-week defender (Spotrac) would undoubtedly bolster Everton’s ranks as they look to shore up their defence ahead of next season.

With Egan’s contract up in 2022 but talks of a renewal in the air, the Toffees ought to move quick for the £4million signing from Brentford (Sky Sports).
