‘Absolutely brilliant’: Lee Dixon left amazed by 29-year-old Tottenham player at the World Cup today
Lee Dixon was left amazed by Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane at the World Cup today on ITV’s coverage of England vs Senegal.
Kane has been in devastating form for Tottenham this season and has scored 12 goals in 15 Premier League games under Antonio Conte.
The 29-year-old was yet to get off the mark in Qatar before this evening, having failed to score in each of England’s group stage games. But of course, the Spurs man found his shooting boots at just the right time and grabbed England’s second goal against Senegal today.
But it wasn’t Kane’s finishing that impressed Dixon, it was his hold-up play in the early stages of the game.
Dixon amazed by Kane
In the 13th minute of today’s last-16 clash with Senegal, Kane received the ball with his back to the goal.
The Spurs talisman then shrugged off one defender before keeping the ball glued to his feet with three Senegal players around him.
He then drew a foul just after playing the ball out to Jordan Henderson and Dixon was full of praise for Kane on ITV.
“That’s absolutely brilliant play from the England centre forward,” he said.
“To be able to hold the ball up with three of them chopping at his ankles, it’s part of his job. He does it brilliantly well.”
England struggled to deal with Senegal’s press during the opening 35 minutes but they found an opener through Henderson.
Kane then opened his account for the tournament just before half-time as Jude Bellingham grabbed his second assist of the game.
The England captain moved within one goal of Wayne Rooney’s all-time scoring record for the Three Lions. Bukayo Saka then rounded off England’s win with a delightful chipped finish over Edouard Mendy.
Kane will be delighted to have got off the mark today and England looked convincing in what was a tough test against Senegal this evening.
