Liverpool winger Luis Diaz has been praised by Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson for his display against Bournemouth on Saturday.

The 25-year-old was one of the standout performers for Jurgen Klopp’s side as they beat the Cherries 9-0 at Anfield.

Liverpool began the season slowly, drawing against Fulham and Crystal Palace before losing to Manchester United.

But on Saturday, it didn’t take the Reds long to surge up the gears, much to Bournemouth’s detriment.

Diaz and Harvey Elliott – who scored his first Premier League goal – had Liverpool 2-0 up after just six minutes.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Roberto Firmino then added one apiece either side of the half-hour mark.

And deep into first-half injury time, Virgil van Dijk made it five with a powerful header from a corner.

The second half saw more of the same, with Chris Mepham scoring an own goal shortly after the restart.

Firmino made it seven just after the hour mark and substitute Fabio Carvalho added an eighth 10 minutes from time,

Diaz, who kick-started the goal-fest, then wrapped it up in the 85th minute of the match with another header.

Speaking after the game, Merson said the £100,000-a-week attacker is “unplayable” on his day.

Asked on Sky Sports whether Diaz was a key player, Merson responded (27/8, 17:15): “Very much so.

“He is all over the place, absolutely all over the place. Sometimes he is unplayable.

“You don’t know what to do. You don’t know whether to follow him up the pitch, do you stick, do you stay.”

Liverpool are next in Premier League action on Wednesday night, hosting Newcastle at Anfield.
