Federico Fernandez completed 90 minutes in the home win over Bournemouth on Saturday – and some Newcastle United fans on Twitter hailed the quality of his performance.
The Magpies earned a 2-1 victory at St James’ Park in the Premier League, as centre-forward Salomon Rondon scored twice in the second-half to make it two wins on the bounce going into the international break.
Rafael Benitez’s side ended up holding on for three points and they have climbed up to 14th in the table after a recent turnaround in form.
Newcastle had to hold on in defence late on against Bournemouth and Fernandez was at the heart of the success.
The 29-year-old centre-back made some notable interceptions to keep the opposition out and has been a brilliant addition to the squad at St James’ Park since his summer arrival.
Newcastle were without captain Jamaal Lascelles at the weekend, but they have a real leader in the team through Fernandez and he appears to be becoming a serious fan favourite.
A selection of Newcastle supporters on social media singled out the commanding defender for his efforts and feel he was crucial to the win.
Here are some of the Newcastle fans tweets on Fernandez:
