‘Absolute baller’: Some Sunderland fans wowed by 20-year-old’s display v Red Devils U21s

Some Sunderland fans have waxed lyrical about Stephen Wearne’s display for the Black Cats in the Papa John’s Trophy on Wednesday night.

The 20-year-old scored the winner for Sunderland in the cup game against Lincoln last time out.

On Wednesday, Wearne repeated the feat against Manchester United Under-21s at the Stadium of Light.

After a goalless first half, Sunderland took the lead through Tyrese Dyce in the 51st minute.

Will Harris’ effort stung the palms of the keeper and the 20-year-old fired home on the rebound.

However, Sunderland were pegged back just before the hour as Zidane Iqbal found the top right-hand corner with a powerful effort.

But in the 67th minute, Ellis Taylor delivered an inch-perfect cross for Wearne to head home.

As well as grabbing the winner, the 20-year-old drove his side forward at every opportunity and always looked like he could make something happen.
